Do I Qualify for Disability?
In our practice as Asheboro Social Security Disability Lawyers, we are often asked: “Do I qualify for disability?” We have answered that question before on our blog, but it’s always good to revisit Social Security’s definition of a disability:
“The definition of disability under Social Security is different than other programs. Social Security pays only for total disability. There are no payments for partial disability or for short-term disability.
The Social Security Administration considers you disabled under Social Security rules if:
- You cannot do work that you did before;
- They decide that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition(s); and
- Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.
This is a strict definition of disability. Social Security program rules assume that working families have access to other resources to provide support during periods of short-term disabilities, including workers’ compensation, insurance, savings, and investments.”
While this definition is clear, there are many reasons you may or may not qualify for disability. It’s important to work with a professional to avoid mistakes and missed deadlines. If you have a severe physical or mental condition preventing you from working for 12 months or more, contact us today. Let us assess your situation. We will help you apply for any Social Security Disability Insurance benefits you qualify for. There is no fee unless we win.
If you live in Asheboro and are either currently applying for government Social Security disability programs, or, have already applied or are appealing a denied disability claim, we may be able to help.

Don’t worry about the cost of hiring a social security disability lawyer. We work on a contingency fee basis which means we don’t get paid unless you win.
How Much Money Do You Get On Disability?
The payment disability claimants receive depends on which Social Security program they qualify for. The Federal Social Security Disability Insurance Program (SSDI) pays benefits based on your average lifetime earnings. The Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program pays benefits based on the SSI Federal benefit rate less any countable income you may have.
The AIME determines your monthly benefit amount. Generally speaking, the more you have in qualified earnings, the more your benefit will be. The max monthly payment for SSDI in 2021 is $3,148.
Maximum Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment amounts increase with the cost-of-living increases that apply to Social Security benefits. The latest such increase, 1.3 percent, became effective January 2021.
For 2021, the maximum benefit is $794 monthly for individuals, and $1,191 for eligible couples.

Asheboro is a residential community of more than 25,000. It is also the county seat of Randolph County in North Carolina.
Asheboro was named after Samuel Ashe, the ninth governor of North Carolina (1795–1798). It was a small village in the 1800s, with a population of less than 200. Asheboro’s population only began to grow significantly following its connection to railroads: the High Point, Randleman, Asheboro and Southern Railroad first served the city in 1889, followed by the Montgomery Railroad in 1896.
Asheboro emerged as a textile production center in the 20th century with the opening of the Acme Hosiery Mills in 1909. After World War II, the city’s manufacturing sector grew to include batteries, wires and food products. The city’s main tourist attraction, the North Carolina Zoo, opened in 1974.
Asheboro is located 85 miles northeast of Charlotte, NC and 27 miles south of Greensboro, NC in the Piedmont Triad.
